Cannabis Packaging

Mylar bags are a staple within the cannabis community and is the most widely used packaging solution within the industry. We’ll be taking a look at the product's history, as well as what makes it the superior product when looking to package and store cannabis.

Mylar is a material that was developed within the DuPont Chemical Company in the 1950s by chemist Charles Stokes. Dupont at the time was looking for a new material that could be used to insulate wires and other electronic components. Stokes, a chemist for Dupont, ended up stumbling upon a polyester film that had excellent insulating properties. Its insulation properties ended up making the product incredibly popular within the food market due to its ability to keep food fresh for long periods of time.

The bag's innovative design and technology ended up becoming an essential part of cannabis packaging in no time! Below we will provide a list of the benefits that mylar packaging has when it comes to preserving and keeping cannabis fresh for longer!

Keeps Cannabis Products Fresh

Mylar is made of a thin polyester film that is laminated with aluminum foil, this makes the bag highly impermeable to light, oxygen, and moisture. By keeping the oxygen and moisture away from the cannabis, mylar bags end up maximizing the lifespan of your cannabis, keeping it fresher for longer.

Keeps Cannabis Products Safe

Mylar bags are extremely lightweight and unlike other storage bags, tear proof, making them extremely durable. Mylar bags are also impact resistant, this protects the integrity of your flower during transportation and delivery!

While it may seem obvious, many people don’t realize how much light exposure can affect not only the color, but the taste, odor, and potency as well. Mylar bags are typically opaque, as the core of the film is made of aluminum. This keeps the light away from the flower stored within the mylar bag, retaining the flower’s natural flavor and odor.

No Toxins

Many plastic bags are made with synthetic chemicals, causing the large majority of these bags to have toxic chemicals, which can lead to these chemicals being added to the flower that is being stored within the plastic bag. Thankfully, Mylar bags are not made with synthetic chemicals, making these bags a way safer alternative than to just be stored in normal plastic baggies.

Mylar bags are also extremely easy to seal up. One can go the more official route via an impact or clamshell heat sealer to close their bags. Don’t worry if you don’t have either of those laying around, because you can even use a flat iron to do the job as well! PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST HEAT SEAL THE MYLAR BAG PROPERLY IN ORDER FOR IT TO DO ITS JOB.

Odor Elimination

Rather than absorbing the odor of the product inside of it, mylar bags retain the aroma of the product being stored inside of it. This keeps the aroma and product fresh, as it acts like a vacuum sealer to keep all of the great flower smell from escaping, marinating it with the flower itself.

At the end of the day, when used correctly, mylar bags are the superior packaging option for the cannabis industry for not only its ability to keep products fresh, but because of its lightweight durability, price points and customization capabilities, making it ideal for any grower or commercial seller.
